A Silver door and glowing logo on the outside of what appears to be a small store front are all that greet you upon arriving at the address. This of course is part of the understated nature of how this venue chooses to present itself. After all the real action takes place in this subterranean lounge/club. Upon entering this DC Hotspot, you immediately descend down a flight of stairs and first encounter the Sushi chefs doing their business. The small Buddha stature present is also a small reminder of the pan-asian influences that inspired this venue. Once you make the turn into the main area, the exquisite interior design and décor come into full view, and is further complemented by the excellent lighting effects. One wall glows with thousands of high-tech lights, sometimes a fiery red resembling a starship's afterburner, sometimes a cool blue. Sleek banquettes and low tables wrap along the wall, used for reservations and bottle service only after 9, and the cozy, womb-like Lotus Room in the back features deep red walls and a DJ booth.

Lotus offers a nice, if somewhat slow, happy hour until 7:30 Tuesday through Friday, with $5 beers, $7 house martinis and $5 sushi rolls. The best time to experience the lounge, though, is late at night, when it fills with beautiful people. Women dance on tables, bartenders mix mojitos and sake-based cocktails, and people groove to the DJ's mix of house, hip-hop, electro and the odd rock song. Cooling mist blasts from the ceiling as the lights pulse, and people throw their hands in the air.

This place isn't the cheapest to get in with an average price of $20. And the lines/wait can get long over the weekends. Your best bet is to get on the various guestlists to minimize your wait. We have heard a few complaints about the door policies and guestlists not being honored. All in all, definitely worth a visit.
